Project Management

Project managers are not born, they are created through years of hard work, experience, and apprenticeship to other project managers. In many organizations, strong project managers can be counted on the fingers of one hand.

There are hundreds of books on project management and many competing project management certifications. However, you don't become a good project manager in a classroom. You become a good project manager on the job. Contrary to popular opinion, mastering Microsoft Project is not sufficient for success.

Excellent project management requires insight, judgment, discipline, education, empathy (some, but not too much), and an appreciation for the issues concerning people, process, data and technology. On a long project, the techniques utilized must evolve - as phases change, team knowledge grows, deadlines approach and fatigue sets in. A good project manager needs rapport and access - with the project sponsor, with various business stakeholders, and with the core project team.

A good project manager:

Needs rapport with and access to the project sponsor, the core project team and the various business stakeholders
Must appreciate the technical challenges, but never lose sight of the business reason for the project
Is a leader of people, a steward of financial resources and a contract manager over multiple parties
Has a strong working knowledge of technology

Avalion has the tools, the templates, and the methods to lead projects AND we have the people whose skills have been honed through the school of hard knocks. We've spent our careers in project management and have the skins on the wall to prove it.

At times, your project manager simply needs a second set of eyes or a coach. Other times, you may need us to be the project manager.

Our experience, judgment and discipline will allow you to:

Successfully realize and measure genuine business value
Keep business stakeholders involved and committed
Chart a realistic plan - modifying it along the way as required
